838. New Sri Lanka Definitives Depict Flowers.

Sri Lanka Post issued 12 new definitive stamps depicting Flowers on 24 August 2016. The issue was designed by DC Janath Suyawardena and lithographed by the Department of Printing, Sri Lanka and perforated 13. These are attractive stamps - colourful and well designed. Rating:- *****.

Sri Lanka Post also issued a set of 3 stamps and an accompanying miniature sheet on 9 October 2016 to commemorate World Post Day. The designs are descirbed as depicting "Ancient conveyance systems of Ceylon" - pigeon post 1850, mail by coach 1820 and mail by clipper 1850. This is an interesting set but the dull colours used makey them rather dark and unattractive. The stamps were designed by Ruwan Indrajith Upasena. Rating:- ****.

The postal service of The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus issued 2 stamps on 22 September 2016  which depict "ethnographic objects". The issue was designed by GK Sonmezer and lithographed by the State Printer, Lefkosa. Rating:- ****.

Fiji Post has issued 2 new sets - I do not yet know the dates of issue - a set of 5 stamps which depict types of hibiscus flowers and a set of 4 stamps which depict local traditional forms of building. Both sets are very interesting and attractive and of strict local relevance. If only some other Pacific nations could follow Fiji's example in the stamps that they or their philatelic agencies release on to the philatelic market. Rating:- *****.

The South African Post Office issued a very attractive, colourful and highly original 10 sided miniature sheet made up of 10 different stamps on 14 September 2016 on the subject of "Telling stories with light". Rating:- *****.

And then, on 26 September 2016, a miniature sheet which contained 4 different stamps was released to commemorate the 17th CITES Conference of the Parties held at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg. The stamps depict the curious and threatened creature, the pangolin. Rating:- *****.

NewZealand Post is to issue 5 stamps inscribed in tiny, barely noticeable lettering, "Ross Dependency" which depict Creatures of the Antarctic sea floor in particular the fauna of the Ross Sea. The $3.30c depicts a particularly sinister-looking creature - a sea spider. I do not yet know the proposed date of issue. Rating:- *****.

New Zealand Post will also issue 1 miniature sheet on 18 November 2016 to commemorate the Christchurch 2016 Stamp and Postcard Exhibition. The theme of the exhibition is the centenary of the Canterbury (NZ) Aviation Company by Sir Henry Wigram. Rating:- ****.

New Zealand Post will then release 4 stamps to commemorate the lunar new year which will be the "Year of the Rooster" and which begins on 28 January 2017. Rating:- ***.

The never-ending tide of issues from Jersey Post continues - it plans to release 8 stamps on 4 November 2016 in its ongoing "Seasons" series which depicts Winter scenes in Jersey. The set was designed by Andy Le Gresley and printed in lithography. This is an attractive set but is lost among the vast number of issues put out by Jersey Post. The 66p value is part of the SEPAC omnibus. Rating:- *.

  1. The release date for the Fiji hibiscus flowers was 12 Aug. The $15 top value is higher than normal.
The Naval village issue was scheduled for sometime in May.

  2. That was supposed to be Navala not Naval.
